Have you heard of the "Golden Rule"? To do unto others what we would have them do unto us?

Well this is the pivot we all need to make whenever we are thinking about changing the way we are writing emails right now.

The first step always is to think about what WE would like...and what WE would absolutely dislike when it comes to the emails we receive.

I know for me my pet peeve is when someone writes to me "Due to company policy...". That can be a trigger for me.

I am sure there are things that you do not like to see in an email, and you can think of many other things that you find irritating, upsetting or disrespectful in emails.

Take some time to think about what these are and write them down.

Do the same for the emails that you really enjoy reading. What have you noticed about people who write in a way that, even if they are having to say "NO" to us, they leave us feeling that it is okay and to be understood?

What do they do that makes the experience acceptable, palatable and respectful?

Take some time to think about what these are and write them down.

Chances are that people who receive emails from us probably like and dislike very similar things. Watch the video to find out what the pet peeves and most likeable things are for readers all around the world when it comes to email responses.
